Thank you for this, as a self taught (in progress) I’ve done every single one of these! (The bad ones) lol
You look really familiar to Chris from DPReview … hmmm
What is the best way to learn fly fishing for a beginner?
Good advice
I too am self taught . I started in the mid 80's , i was living on watts bar lake in tn . Learned a lot of the mistakes the hard way . Started tyeing my own flys in the winter . Before i bought a tyeing book i produced some real monstrocities 😮 . Im better now . Anyway i love fly fishing and encourage others to take it up . Enjoyed this video but you were preaching to the choir . Happy casting and thank you
Good stuff👌
…simple other thing is to wear drab colour clothing, no bright colours.
Thankyou💪
One thing I have to say is practicing without a hook on at first is a must. I wanted to put a hook on and immediately catch fish when I first started but I kept hooking myself in the legs. Luckily the hook was very small and didn't have a lot of momentum. Usually after about ten minutes of false casting you get used to the weight and how long you need to pause on the back cast and how to control the path of the line. Then you put a hook on and cast.
Not a single tip was lost with me but the one that was the "Aha" moment was regarding casting with 50 ft of line for a 50 foot cast. I can say I even understood the concept of shooting line but have not been using it in practice. I have developed the bad habit of single hauling line out to the 50 foot mark where I can tell I have just enough out and making my final cast onto the water (which involves another bad habit you mentioned, false casting and tiring out). I have wondered for a long time why my presentations have often been so abrupt and just didn't stop to pinpoint why. I have the full length of my line in the air and when I make the final cast the fly comes to abrupt end in the air and makes for a slam down nasty presentation on the water. I can't wait to get out and get back to basics and leave a little line dangling so I can shoot that section of line and make a more delicate presentation. This is guaranteed to scare less fish and maybe even bring a few more in for a looksy.
Nice video. Thanks. I remember fishing with the fly intact but a broken hook. Missed a few.
Chris from DPReview?
It's refreshing to see an instructional video where a right handed instructor has the line spooled so that he reels with his left. I boggles my mind how many instructional videos I've seen where the instructor casts & reels with the same hand! If we wanna talk about line management, we must include line management after a hook set. At LEAST half of the hits I get are during a line retrieve, and it's far easier to cope when you don't have to switch hands to reel up & play your fish. Also, if you have good manual dexterity & timing (guitar players, I'm looking at you), there's no reason your excess line needs to touch the ground or be carried downstream. When you retrieve, throw a couple loops over the tip of your index finger, then a couple over your middle finger, then your ring finger, then your pinkie if necessary. When casting, drop your fingertips in well-timed succession to release the line. It takes practice, but this way you don't need to pull the line out of the river and false cast it all back out there.
Dang! I've been watching you for years, Chris, reviewing camera gear. Then when a friend wants me to step up my flyfishing game … "boom!" there you are again. 😀 Great video btw!
Thank you. I just picked up a new fly rod, I have never done it yet, but need to learn to fish the Truckee river more
This video was awsome for me 🙂 just got my first flyrod so now i know how to think a little on how to get started 🙂
My first thought was: 'Wait, isn't this the camera review dude?'- immediately followed by 'Am I being racist?', then, after checking 'Oh well, it actually is the camera review dude.'
Damn, he's the camera guy too
This garbage video has 250k views? What the heck dude. This guy sucks at fishing. His cast is probably the worst cast in all of fly fishing. The stupidest advice I’ve ever heard and the spot this guy picks to do his video on a massive river like 8000cfs and then to finish off the stupidity he tells you to spend hours untangling knots!!! Idiot!! When your line gets messed up just cut it and tie a new line. It’s much easier and you won’t look like a dumb dumb like this guy is. I’m not sure if this guy has ever caught a fish and I’m not sure why he’s decided to make videos instruction people on how to be stupid like him. All I know is he’s a sick individual because he has to be. Why ?????????
Good video
I USE A POUCH TO PUT MY LINE INTO
I stumbled across your channel after looking for UK small river trout spinning (I know…very odd) but now I'm going to dust off my 25 year old fly rod……I really liked your approach about reading the river and I will adopt the same approach. It's early May here and I've noticed some small brown trout rising for fly on the water around 6pm in the evening, this makes me feel I need to research the kind of fly that are out on the river this time of year. I'm feeling really exited about getting the fly rod out…….I will most likely need lots of help but your channel will hopefully help me get back into it.
Much love from the UK 🙂
Good tips!ty
omg! thank you! i cannot tell you how often i see people false cast so often when they dont need to, besides that, alot of times theres people behind you and false casting is a great way to hook onto people lol, ive seen it too often
A lot of REALLY great tips!
Thanks for taking good care on the editing too.
Thank you very much! As a fly fishing beginner the false cast is killing me. I will pay attention from now on 😊
I thought I clicked on a wrong link seeing Chris here
You didn’t touch on how to cast. I see these amateurs slapping the water like it owes them money. They let the line hit the water before the fly.
Man, I remember you ! I've forgotten about you, I used to enjoy your camera shop video , with your sidekick; then I get disinterested and move on to something else. Then I remember you got into fishing and watched some videos, and moved on again to other interest, and forgotten about you again. So this video appears on my list that i might be interested in, so I clicked on it , and it was you again and I said, 'it's that guy again, I remember him'! Hey nice presentation on this subject, I look forward to seeing more of your video. I subbed to your channel this time.
Sharp hooks…but barbless
Best advice I’ve heard for starting out fly fishing>>>>>cheers.
Cool Good video 👍👍
To others :
Lefty Kreh …
Too many many view channels or YT vids that include fly fishing and animated talking, pronounced movement, splashing while chatting over streams to their friend and wearing bright clothes, dangling, sparkly items, flying drones messing wuth cameras…
Basically introducing general mayhem to the immediate landscape
The intimacy of Smaller bodies of water
and how noise Carries
and reflections and water clarity notify fish and the natural world of your presence …
just might contribute
To how someone’s day in or next ! to a body of water goes when the fish that are there may already be scarce and skittish
… stealth
Liked and subbed bro, awesome tips for a noob in NZ.
How should you fish the bank on your side of the river before you wade in? Just cast from the shore first? Any special casts or tricks for that?
Felt this. Ty!
Very good tips!!! Thank you for sharing those
Did I see you before doing cameras reviews?
Excellent job with this video.
I live in England and recently got together with an American woman who fly fishes . This really helped . Thanks .
