Simple Trick To Prevent Wind Knots From Uneven Braided Line On Spinning Reels
There is nothing worse than wind knots (aka tangles) in your braided line of your spinning reel. Most anglers tend to believe that “wind knots” are created from having to much slack in the line as you are reeling in. And this is certainly one way to increase the chances of knots in your braided fishing line.
But one of the other probable causes of knots and tangles is due to uneven line on your reel (due to overlapping line). The great news is that this can be corrected simply by taking the top of the spool off, and either replacing, adding to, or taking away some of the washers inside your reel.
You will definitely have to play around with it, but by changing up these washers, you can find the perfect height for a smooth and even spool.
Note: If you have too many washers on your spinning reel, the spool will sit too high, which causes the line to build up evenly at the bottom.
The opposite is true if your spinning reel spool is too low (the line will build up at the top).

I glad I caught this tutorial. I was having this problem & thought it the nature of braid. Also a Saltstrong member & have learned alot.
thank you for all the great information, keep it coming
Sir i remove all washers but facing same problem, what i do?
I put a washer in and it still the same ..not aligned
Wish I couldve found this video a week ago. 100% fixed my problem thank you so much!
Thanks mate, I don’t think my Shimano reel came with any washers.. I got 1 reel even and the 2nd one uneven so not sure what went wrong
Always wondered what the washers were for 🤦🏻♂️. Great channel. Very helpful 👍
Hi there, I have learnt something from this video thank you very much.
Never thought about this, always just loaded new line on spool and used it.
It was only that I decided to load braid and read about wind knots that lead Me to this video.
On checking My spools, My reel is loading more to the bottom. I have looked inside and have two 0.5mm thick washers. I'm going to try and remove one and load the braid and see what I get then.
Many thanks Paul.
Now i know whats this free plastic washer are for.
I just found this video. I just received a Van Staal VR50 purchased at Salt Strong. I noticed my braid is larger at the bottom of the spool. I did a quick look and did not see the nylon washer. Please help. Lots of wind knots.
That outro lmao
i wish i could see this video early 1 year before i receive my new reel, hahaha, dammmm
Do you have to put a washer back on if you dont have one?
Could you please tell me how to solve the same issue on Penn Slammer I? The oldest Slammer, with narrow spool and weird washer on the shaft (something like a tiny rod going through the shaft perpendicularly)?
Thanks
Would have been nice to see what you removed from the reel. There's lots of little parts
50 yrs of fishing and never knew this! thanks
Also, close bail manually= less wind knots
Did not know that is what those washers were for. Thanks.
What to do if the line is longer on the upper and lower side, and less in the middle?
With braid since it has less memory than mono does it matter which way you spool it up?
Great tip, Thanks
I am getting too many wind knots but thinking it is from small guides and the line is backing up and getting tangled. Could that be a thing?
