My best day was from 130-3 pm… 5 fish ranging from 12-16 including 1 1.5 lbs n 2.5 lbs using shrimp cuts… I've tried late morning n evening, n it appears to me the key is the wave activity

I like fishing at night because I get different kinds of fish and bigger fish but I usually fish 2 hours before high tide and 2 hours after high tide.
I just don't know why I never have good luck with sandcrab. I had tried more than three times and in a different days too.
Pacifica, HMB, and SC shortly after daybreak lots of fish and then the bite shuts down after 9:00 AM. Low tide, High tide, incoming/outgoing hasnt mattered. Typically skunked during the day unlike CaliCo. My favorite is an evening high tide though I cant do that much.
To avoid gut hooking perch try using long shank circle hooks there are a few sizes available from Eagle Claw you have to learn how to not set the hook anymore with circle hooks all you do is wait for the fish to turn and the hook will self apply when the fish turns away with the bait even if he swallows the hook the hook will not engage until the hook catches in the corner of the mouth works perfect for surf for rough surf when you can't feel the bite the fish hook themselves I use a eagle claw 1 x long Circle number 4, L703 s s u – 4. The long shank allows you to put on the big sand crabs and also multi small sand crabs on one hook
Best time to fish is when the fish are biting in my experience! Lol never fished on the ocean other than off a pier in South Carolina.

Sounds counterintuitive but most of my best outings in the surf have coming during late morning to mid afternoon when the sun is high and the skies are clear. Time of year doesn't seem to matter in this regard. I also do well sometimes right before sunset, but have never done particularly well early in the morning. My theory is that surfperch prefer a certain amount of light to hunt for sand crabs, which I'm basing off my experience that they almost always stop biting right after dusk. Could also just be that I'm not a morning person and end up channeling negative energy towards the fish causing them to not bite lol.

During summer in places where its hot id say mornings but rest of year evening when the water warms a few degrees throughout the day. Thats freshwater though..saltwater is hard to say
