5 tips for trout fishing in lakes
Here are 5 tips for trout fishing in lakes.
Personally, I prefer to do most of my trout fishing in streams, however during the winter months when the trout streams are all closed, I am limited to lakes and impoundments.
This winter, I have not even had the chance to get out and go trout fishing in a lake as I have been far too busy with work. I am hoping that changes next week so that I can get out and wet a line, most likely in Lake William Hovell.
Although I was at Lake William Hovell yesterday, I was not fishing for trout. In fact, I was not fishing at all as I am on-call at work and had to be back in an area with phone service pretty quickly, so I done some filming and some photography and got out of there.
So here are my personal top 5 tips for trout fishing in lakes.
Other people may have tips, if so feel free to leave them in the comments below, but for now, here are my top 5 tips for trout fishing in lakes.

Great video man. No BS, just great info!
Hi Robbie, can't believe I missed this video. What a putz!! Anyhoo. I'm primarily a boat fisher person( a bloke in this case) and I really enjoy flatline trolling and Leadline trolling. I have one tassie devil(a bit limp I know) but, thanks to your video I off to my local tackle store to expand my range. I'm pretty sure now, one pink one is not enough! I actually have it mounted on a leadline setup. Question(if I may), should I use the deeper diving version to help the leadline do it's job of getting the lure deeper down. Or will the Leadline max out the standard lure for depth?
As usual another great video, many thanks. Peter
Hey legend, any tips for a good spot at lake eildon for land based? Going to give it crack this week
some good hints but would have been better for us noobs if you showed the types of lures you were talking about
thanks
I have only caught a trout at trout farms so hopefully your advice could assist 🤣
Hey Robbie! Love your channel mate! Can you share your rod and reel of choice for trout fishing?
awsome vid mate. what size rod and reel is best, is a 0.5 – 3 kg rod ok to use?
😄 Great advice 👍
Thank you…
That there is a cracking good vid with lots of knowledge shared thanks Robbie!👍. PS I think hot pink tassie's are the go to aswell😊✌️
I fuckin love your accent bud
Personally, I wish he named more lakes
1:40 well that’s where I am right now getting tips for going trout fishing haha (Jindabyne)
How do you rate powerbait Rob?
Great vid mate
do you know anything about the West Barwon Reservoir? is it a good spot?
Thanks heaps Robbie !! I haven’t been catching any fish for 5 days at the lake out the back of my house and after those tips I caught a trout on a blade and salmon eggs / power bait
Great video buddy salut you from Ireland.. I'm new to fishing and looking forward to catch my first trout in the near future… I have one question do I use a float or do I bottom lake fishing?
This guy reminds me of Steve Irwin. Subbed!
Very informative!
just speaking for over 11mins and not doing any demo? why not just recording a sound track…
Thanks you sir for all the helpful info! I always casted thinking they were going for warmer waters! I will be trying them Shady areas and days, no wonder I haven’t caught anything big yet!
What's a good size hook for trout
I live near a large unstocked lake with loads of predators in Ireland like redfin and pike and if I use bait I catch large bait fish and if I use lures I catch pike (wich are like pickerel but a lot bigger)
Hey Mate, love your show. I live in Ballarat – next time you come this way to do a vid on Wendouree (trolling vs shore fishing, maybe?) I'd love to know just to be able to stop by and give a proper hello.
Alright I love all your videos mate and I still like this one but tip no.2 about best to catch trout in low light and also no.3. I grew up in Tassie with some of the best trout fishing in the world, I can say IV always caught more trout at high noon then low light. Also one of the best winged lures would be the Tassie devil fredo frog. Best baits for me would be mudeyes, wood cockroaches (the pure black ones) worms and grasshoppers. No disrespect mate just my 2 cents. One last thing bright orange flesh = the best tasting trout
What is a yabbi? And any other tips for native trout ?
Good tips mate
The
BlacktipH, the Dude Perfect of fishing.
The transitions oh man..
I can't understand u what's a switch blade and a tazzy
I wonder what he would say about Lake Taneycomo.
Robbie can I just thank you for being a good sport it's all learning. And yes thank you for correcting me😅, rivers are closed winter time. The point I was trying to make was timing is everything even fishing winter time around river mouths and along banks after the brown trout have finished their run they are more confident then rainbows and will feed in shallow water up close to the banks.
Thanks again for being a good bloke would love to trade fishing tips with you one day on the water cheers. 🍻
And mate is illegal to fish with worms in rivers in NSW kids and women bait fish drift flies on a spin rod or soft plastics, real bait in rivers be careful.
Tip 5 what's wrong with grasshoppers and crickets and pretty much all insects even a small mouse. Bro bro bro have you ever caught a 10+pounder trout in one of our lakes or rivers doubt it. FISH rivers spawn time and summer you know there deep so down rig trawl certain deep parts of lakes that hold yabbies.
Mate morning or evening you can throw a spoon with a hook attached and catch trout, mate I've caught trout on a hook with no bait right place right time fishing is timing in every sense of the word.
Also on your third point you might find u are getting more fish in the shade as the can't detect ur leader or recognise or realise it's a lure.
Your third point is correct
Your second point trout don't like sun light mate no try barometric pressure. What do river trout do on a sunny day? And yes cloudy days help but it's not because the fish don't like sun light.
Winter is also spawn time so targeting them in the rivers is the go mate fishing is timing.
Your first point brother if the trout head deep in summer they r easier to find (down rigs)
