Boat life would be hard for anyone in less than good physical condition. Good luck!
We love *any* kind of video from you Dan Brown. :). You sound like your happy self and it's good to see (hear) you and Sam discussing the possibilities! ❤ Hopefully, Charlie and the Flat Cat get along – (Some of us remember the Flat Cat, lol!) Absolutely beautiful visuals as always! I know you said you're going in another direction with your videos, but we all greatly enjoyed your cooking/baking evenings…
I have found every attempt at living with a girlfriend on the boat has been a BIG mistake. Probably 1 in a 1,000 woman can hack the challenging conditions, even tho I have all the comforts of home. PS: new boat means new problems. Allot to be said for keeping the boat you know well. Put a diesel hydronic heater in to up the comfort lvl.
Hi Dan and Sam, living on a boat is ALWAYS a compromise, as is any alternative to the “normal”, so takes a bit of getting used to, but, is very rewarding too. Last week we hit minus 10 where I am and it was a challenge to keep the boat warm at times but, that’s the coldest that I’ve known in 10 years on my boat.
You need to find a good coal merchant who sells decent coal at a reasonable price, rather than buying that poor quality, overpriced stuff, they will probably do logs too. I currently pay £13 for 20kg of excell, (was £11 last year for 25kg !), much better than the B&M stuff.
Wow why is coal so expensive in the UK are people getting greedy
Great to hear back from you and Sam! If it's not too private, might you talk in some future video about how both of you met? (since you're on a boat, and she's on dry land and all!) It's good to hear that you've survived the cold snap alright.
Could you find yourself a cheaper source of logs? I think warmth on the boat is very important, especially if your partner isn't well at present.
Best wishes for Christmas to you both.
I was thinking of a portable power bank ,but I see you are way ahead of me Dan.
Hi Dan and Sam, what a predicament for you both, I can absolutely see both sides, but I can imagine it will be a huge change for Sam as you Dan have lived on a boat for a long long time, even though Sam has been coming and going over the years it wont be the same, it could be better it could be worse, you will never know until you have tried it. Maybe Sam ought to rent her house out for maybe a year, and in that time she will really know if its for her or not and not burnt her bridges so to speak. Whatever you both decide I wish you both the best of luck. ❣
Very nice volg,👍👍👍👍
Sam, they do a cpac machine that will run off 12v,
Have you considered a wide beam as a possible compromise?
Advice from a 57 year old,, who hasn't moved house for 30 years….. …. you get one chance at your lifetime guys, please take those opportunities whist they are there.
Life is a journey.. .. .. ..❤❤💚
You might consider a UPS for Sam's CPAP. When the power goes out they can make an alarm go off so you'd know.
There isn't anything wrong with continuous cruising but marina life is pretty good…something to consider, especially as there are going to be a couple of cars to juggle. It has been chilly but I have most of a ton of coal to get through and I have enough wood to see me through although I went through more than half just over this latest cold snap. It's convenient to be able to have that much in close proximity and not paying the inflated costs of coal over the coldest months as I bought mine in September. It also takes the CPAP problem out of the equation as shore power is nice to have.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
hi dan sam good vid on the channel thanks lee
Sam you will love the boat. Dan is natural on them boats. There very cosey all year long.look how happy how that beautiful dog is.
Hi Dan ..With the weather systems changing and if you are thinking of upgrading it would be worth looking into having the hull spray foamed. The boat would be warmer and way easier to heat and your costs for heating would go down. With spray foam it has to be properly prepped and sprayed correctly so no gaps are present. I have had my steel sailboat for 22 years and we have zero rust inside and the boat is always warm. The interior hull was prepped with Zinc epoxy then spray foamed in. Even if you had insulation on the panels it would help….Thanks again for the update…Another few days and at least we start to get more light!! Merry Christmas my friend to the both of you !!
Nothing is ever straightforward in life is it?! I hope Sam's chest gets better. My daughter had a chest infection. She decided to stay in bed and keep warm. In an ideal world, you could both live in the house winter time. Then stay in the boat spring summer!! But it's what is going to suit you guys. But it has been particularly cold recently. We are paying for the nice summer we had! Take care guys. X
This video really interested me. I can totally see both sides. Dan has found out (the hard way) that he is happiest on the water. But then he fell in love, and naturally wants Sam to share his world, his life. Sam, on the other hand was never drawn to a life such as Dan's. But she's also in love with Dan, so this puts Sam into the difficult position of having to be the one to change her life to fit in with Dan's. That's the conundrum! So I would keep the status quo. There has been an awful lot of packing and unpacking for you both. At least wait til the spring. Things always look sunnier in the spring. It's a season of hope and growth. Spring will bring the answers. I believe this will happen.
I think you are both smashing!
Dan, I was just thinking you should try and get an old traditional bot with rear cabin for you and put Sam up front in the deluxe captains quarters. That would work!!! 👍🏻
Love all the shos of Charlie, warms the heart! Whatever you two decide, we wish you nothing but the best together! -9c here today, appreciate the fire shots as well! Fare well Dan and Sam.
Awesome vid as always
Nice one both,
Hmm, canal boat or girlfriend? Well, let's see … Canal boat requires licensing, insurance, mooring fees, going to get water and fuel, occasional mechanical repairs … Girlfriend requires in-person interaction with another human being whether I want to or not … I dunno, man, that's a tough one to call.
😉😆
6:30 I got 12 swans outside and a knocking on my boat right now for food, they have managed to break a lot of the ice though.
8:20 I am lucky as have free heating at moment 😁 and being minus who knows that helps a lot.
Come on Sam, take the plunge (not literally) and move onboard with Dan! He's a good old stick so I'm sure he'll do everything he can to keep you warm and comfortable. Dan you can pay me later 👍🏻😂
Thank you, for sharing, interesting 🙏✝️🙏🇨🇦
May I ask why you want to change boats ,what is wrong with your existing one .Could you not put some money into refurbishing your current boat ?.
My heating stratagy is to drive to a window replacement compay or companies and ask to take their cut up window /door frames away….cut them up and bingo..seasoned hard wood, sometimes softwood….ive got more wood than i need…ive had to find a sneaky stash hiding place…havent paid for heating for about 5 years now….ive done the coal thing…the gas furnace heater thing…but for me its wood…i even love sharpening my bowsaw and spending a day cutting in the fresh air…builds up the muscles and gets that blood pumping…easy peasy….😊👍
Use the ash and the wet paper to clean the window Dan. Old trick!
Interesting views Dan. I bought me first narrow boat 28 years ago and i do remember it being this cold back then during a few winters . However so far this season being a live a boarder this is by far the most expensive one because of the price rises in Coal , kindling and even the fire lighters . Boats are really expensive right now but maybe this increased cost might lead to a price adjustment like you pointed out here. ATB and God Bless.
👍
