Homemade Wooden jon boat.
Homemade jon boat built from Uncle Johns plans
Took me approx six months to complete. 15′ 7″ long, floor is 46″ wide and sides approx 17″ tall. Floor and sides made from 3/8″ ply, transom 1-1/2″ ply. Outside covered in fiberglass and 4 coats of epoxy. Inside is approx 80% covered in fiberglass plus 4 coats of epoxy all over. Underneath has an additional 4 coats of epoxy/graphite mix. I finished it with Gliden exterior latex paint – figured that since it will be out of the water about 95% of its life and covered that it does not need marine paint. All deck areas have a non slip additive. It is very stable and handles well. With a 15hp motor it does about 20 mph and accommodates two people easily. I recommend Uncle John’s plans and for fiberglass supplies, both were very helpful when I called with questions. Special thanks to my wife Lisa for putting up with all the time I spent on it, thanks to Mike for his help and Sherry for the name. Thank you Doug for the seats. Thanks most of all to God, I pray that it will somehow be used for His glory.

Good article my uncle in Neb. had a wood jon boat.
Your boat is beautiful. I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina and we do not make such a boat cut. He would like to make a change in boat making. I'm only interested in the corners of the sides, front and back. I already have a plan in my head but I just need the right angles. thanks
Hello again thanks for answering my last question. I have another question. How many feed of cloth and how much resin did you order/ use. I want to go with the weave and two part. Thanks again for the help.
Thanks for the great video and write up. It’s help me in fine tuning Jon’s plans. My only question is on the transom. Did you laminate two pieces to get the 1 1/2 thickness or is it one piece?
Still looking for a real old fashioned build made with real wood planks like I grew up with. Seems no one can work without factory fabricated crap.
PARABENS…….ADOREI SEU PROJETO……ESTEJA BEM……….A MUSICA TAMBEM É OTIMA
Very nice……good job.
Did you use the Dablemont design?
"The authentic American jon boat"
I built a 14ft Jon boat in a 15ft enclosed apartment patio from that book back in the late 70's early 80's
There were a lot of Noah references because I refused to use any power tools… Some residents actually thought my name was Noah. 😂
It was nice and very maneuverable but damn was it heavy after it got wet. No fiberglass I just painted it with porch paint. Surprisingly it leaked very little and once the wood swelled after a bit… No more leak.
Sadly, I never took pictures of the progress or the boat.
What building method did you use?
Absolute beauty of a boat
How many hp outboard you use?
Stunning
Im thinking about making one myself
Very Fancy! I built an 8 ft jonboat in a week for under $300 – it's been great for one person flyfishing. No plans, just slapped her together. I think THAT is the true spirit of the jonboat.
Love the color choice…
Please can you email me your plans and measurements, everything don't have to be exactly right just to sketch pencil drawing close enough will be good enough for me thank you.
I can make it myself. Just got instructions from Woodprix website and I'm ready for do it 😀
Dimension?
Nice job!
Ficou ótimo o bote amigo parabéns
About how many hours would you say you had into the build? Nice job btw!
She's a Beaty! Looks fast too!
How did it hold up over the years?
That looks great! Really thinking about giving this a go myself. I can't imagine how good it feels to accomplish something like that. Great work!
the forgotten art of the wooden boat ! great work ! thanks for taking us along for the ride .
I've been researching into constructing boats and found a fantastic website at Denelle boat builder (check it out on google)
Is there a certain method you used to bend the plywood for the front bottom of the boat?
Ya did a awesome job building it.. It's great to see it in action..
thank for sharing the video, and thank for music, which it is easy on my ears while waking up with a cup of coffee
Looks great! I don't suppose you have any drawings of your stretched plans? Or did you just eyeball it? Debating on how high I want to stretch the sides on mine, and it looks like yours is perfect.
Howd you spend $900 at home depot if I may ask? Wouldn't it cost under $200 in wood?
if that was homemade great work!
very nice. i would like to build one similar
Mate this is an awesome build…I am going to have to up my skills to top it….I built a 12 footer a year ago and I've made a few videos of it working….but my next build will be better.
beautiful boat! I am wanting to bud one just like it… did you modify the plan's from the website?
You did a great job bud !!! What did that cost to build including the motor, and the trailer ???? Are you going to build more ??? I would like to see you build a fishing boat that has storage maybe a little bigger motor and if you are I would like to see it on youtube…..
I have spent months studying constructing boats and discovered a fantastic resource at Denelle Boat Builder (check it out on google)
Here's several ideas for building boats:
Give yourself enough time.
Use ready made boat outlines.
(I read about these and more on Denelle boat builder website )
fantastic build! thank you for sharing.
I'd love to see one a bit bigger with a canopy top and a hammock so you never have to leave the water 🙂
nice job,,,,,
Nice 🙂 Congratulations 🙂
excellent job!
Nice work. I wanna one. 😀
did you fiberglass the hull before adding the skids?
I still love this vid!
Man that's a great looking dog. Boat's not to bad either. LOL. Thanks for taking the time to show it
