Check out the Fox 40 Sonic Blast
Thanks so much for this, there are practically no guides on whistles for kayaking as well as how/where to put them on your PFD.
Excellent video! I hope everyone watches this one!
Great topic! I keep a separate whistle on all my vests so I don’t have to think about swapping, and I usually keep at least one spare in my paddle bag. I should start paying attention to whether other boaters have one. I agree it’s an essential piece of WW gear.
I use Fox 40 Classic and the Epik CMG (Comfort Mouth Grip), but have no real preference. I think someone like a lifeguard who is using it a lot might benefit from the CMG rubber. I attach using very thin bungee (like what clothing tags often use), since it allows some stretch but would easily break away in the event of a snag. I have also used plastic bead lock loops in the past.
I tie it on the shoulder strap, like you show here, but I never found the need to tuck it. It’s tied just long enough to reach my mouth, but no longer, and it just dangles there. I’ve noticed that if I’m wearing my full face it can be harder to use the whistle, which is just something to be aware of. Maybe practice w helmet on before you need it in a stressful situation.
We have whistles but when on lower class rivers usually whoop whoop… Really loud. Newer paddlers that swim morso sometimes perceive we are enjoying their swim to much tho with whoop whoop😁
definitely the best whistles
Yeah got this one attached to my ninja on the zipper and I keep the zipper up at the top so it makes it quicker and easier not just to access my whistle but my pocket where my knife is
I 3d print them, and always have a bag full of them and pass them out during safety brief
I carry 2 Fox 40 whistles and my spray skirt has a whistle built into the grab loop.
Have the same whistle affixed with fishing line.
I like the Fox 40 Micro (slimline). I use a short cord that is long enough that the whistle can reach my mouth, but not longer, so it doesn't get wrapped around anything.
I am curious when I see a whistle connected to a zipper on a PFD with no tether. How does someone blow their whistle without loosening their PFD and lifting it up?
I also have a Fox 40 attached to my backpack for any hiking or climbing trips.
