I know they hit spinner at Prineville Resevior. I'd try a sinking fly that is black and sparkly as long as the water is clear and you have a bright day otherwise try white, I don't think they will go for wild colors or anything to fancy. Plain and white or black bepending on the light and water clearity.

I wonder if it's anything like fly fishing for carp.

if you are in Texas you should use a fly that would mimic a dying crappie or shad. Scent is always nice but when I was in Nebraska last time they had a 100lb cat that they fed live trout at an aquarium. I read a catfish magazine saying they eat pretty much whatever hits the water snakes, chicks, rats etc....

I would use an alaskan flesh fly loaded down with mackrel scent. Catfish love frozen mackrel fillet. You could even wrap a chunk of mackrel onto a big hook with miracle thread and fly line that stuff out there.

channel cats live their lives more like an open water fish than others and will chase live fish. Find out where they are in good numbers in Eastern Oregon and give it a shot.
I think the secret would be finding out where there's alot of them.

You do realize I live in Tx, correct? lol, and I'v been trying for a while now, I had something hit a big home made White fly that I had tried to make it mimic a shad, or crappie even, hard thing is just to find them since brown murky water is tough to sight fish in, but i'm not given up yet! :)

Alright so I just got back a little while, n took some pics which I hope to get on here later, I CAUGHT A CATFISH ON A FLY! It was quite the challenge, had been fishing all day and used a jig I'd normally see ppl jig for crappie, so I put some black on it, and let it marinate is dead shad oil, and went down where there would be a little current, tossed it out n watched it sink, then it hit it! WHAM! hahaha, I'v never seen a 9ft trout fly rod bend down that much with a 12 pound catfish:D:D I'l try to get the pics up here 2night or tomorrow, sorry for the delay:)

No thank you, I think I'm good for now. I'm going to make a trip back home for Christmas, I might be able to get a good night of catfishing in while I'm there. That will hold me over till I get back just in time to work the steelhead on the Sandy.

That's incredible man! Wow. I've been lucky enough to catch a few really nice big Channel Cats in my life, and i know how hard they fight. Fight like a bull... Haha. On a fly rod it must have been a whale of a time. Very nice of you to share it with us! :)

Yea its no biggy, but It sure gave me a whirl chasin it along the bank haha, The rod n reel was a cheap combo I bought a few years back when I lived in oregon from Bi-Mart if I remember right? 20$, well its its price, and very reliable!! I watched a guy wrestle with a 70+ channel cat a few weeks ago, man that got my blood pumping:eek::D
