I took on the challenge of taking two rookies fly-fishing. we hit up the Crooked and the flows are up considerably for irrigation purposes, but fish were around. One of the guys was able to hook into quite a few fish landing 3 bows and one big whitey. He did manage to lose two big redsides that pushed the 20" enevelope. The other guy well lets say he mastered tying some of the most incredibly perplexing knots ever involuntarily tied with the leader. He just couldn't get the grasp of castiing and when he did get a hit he yanked way too hard and missed what seemed like a million and 1 hits, therefore being shut out. Gave me a whole new perspective for guides. You guides truly are a special breed. Still a beauty day on a truly unique and beautiful setting. Time for just me to go fishing Tuesday.

:) Sounds like you had fun. I always set the hook too softly and am an expert at tying knots because I "used" to be very good at getting snagged. :D

I would be the guy tying all the knots I'm sure, I have no clue how to cast a fly rod :) Have a good time tomorrow if you make it out.

One of these days I'm going to get a car/truck/something with wheels, and I'm going to drive my tired butt over to that end of the state and do some fly fishing. I've already taken two terms worth of fly fishing where I really feel like I learned a LOT from a very good fly fishing guide, and I'm really itching to put it to the test on something other then planter trout ^.^

To get back on topic, sounds like it was at least a learning day on a great fly river. You can't go wrong with that. :)

Heck Ryan u would be the guy hauling in 20"ers making everybody else jealous with the MOJO you put on fish. It is not hard when the indicator goes under set the hook. If one sits there and waits up to 4 sec after the float has gone under they arten't going to have a very good hook up ratio. The big D is getting reqady to blow up with caddis hatches. Everybody and thier brother will be over there for the Mother's day hatch. The caddis were hatching big time the other day on the Crooked. Makes for funb dry fly fishing. T Wise give me a heads up when u want to come over this way and we can hook it uo on any of the good fly water in this area. Plus the lower Mckenzie is giving up fish and they are starting to catch Steel on the fly right there in Eugene. It is gearing up to be one heck of a summer. Good luck to all as I am out the door to try an hit Wickiup for a big brown or hungry bow.
