View Full Version : Matzu Octopus hooks?
Anyone know where a guy can find Matzu Octopus hooks locally (Salem/ Albany)
I'd like to pick up about a hundred of them for some trial and error. I really like the looks of the extra wide gap and throat.

Please post your hook ratio. Thanks

Sorry to say it, guys.
unless things have changed, I wouldn't use them.
Too hard, brittle and inconsistent. The sickle hook seems popular because of it's shape and the size is easy to 'take care of'. Why use a Gammi copy when you can use the real thing?

If you cant find those at a sportmans , you could get the in 2 or 3 days online.
Might work really well for sidedrfiting bait, with lower mortality, would be interested in your findings.
Went ahead and ordered 125 of them from Cabelas. I'll give them a go and see if they result in better or worse hookup and landing ratios. I'd heard some negatives about them a few years back so if they end up being brittle, hard, or inconsistent I wont be too suprised.
I've been fishing a lot of vision hooks for side drifting winters, but still run gamu's for everything else.

Hope I wasn't too negative....
I hope they work out for you.

Not at all. That's good feedback. If they end up being junk I'll toss them. Winter Steelhead have given me some "issues" over the last two seasons so I'm trying to do some experimenting with hooks, size and orientation document it all and find a better combination.

GW what ever happened with these? What did you find out from your on the water testing?
RB
They weren't my favorite. I found that the taper on the point was really shallow and it made for a longer point. Because of that, it rolled over easier than the Gamu's and Visions that I usually use. Any time I'd get the hook snagged up or even fish it for an extended period of time without getting hung up, the point would be rolled and I'd think "hmm, wonder if that would have cost me a fish?".

I tried them this year as well and had alot of breakage issues. I still love the siWash hooks they make. Not sure why but I have not had any issues with them. Just the octopus.
Thanks
RB
I'm still planning on getting some siwash style when I'm in your area. I think they'll work just dandy on some plugs.
You run those on spinners? Ever notice the points rolling?

I have not noticed it and have not had any issues with missed fish on the siwash. We have also had great results on plugs with them. Had a friend go 1 for 5 on kwikfish and o for 3 the next day. He put on the hooks and went 7 for 9 the next two days.

Did he bead chain the hooks or just put them on the split ring?

I find the Sickle siwash hooks to be too big and heavy. The gami siwash hooks have always been good to me. I like the fact that the point on a gami is long and straight and that the hook can be off set with a twist of the pliers. By creating an off set hook you'll increase your ratio of fish landed. From my experience the Sickle hooks are too thick to create an off set.
