Fished the lower Trask this morning, missed a couple solid bobber downs. Stopped by a private pond just to see if the trout were biting. Grabbed my steelhead rod and went to tie on a panther martin, then thought "wonder how far I could cast this #5 blue fox?". Picked up my pliers, snipped off two hooks, pinched down the barb (sorry Ed) and let her fly. This was the result of my third cast. Fish was maybe 18" but weighed every bit of 6 pounds. Went airborne twice and fought hard. Had to let her go but at least now I know what a steelhead feels like on my new Okuma rod! http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/adambomb1982/bigbow.jpg
That thing is tiny! Imagine how fun it'd be on a fly rod. :D

Gawd! I love those trout that really do look like a dam Steelhead!
Thing looks like a fat hen steelhead from the gillplate foward!

That pond starts with a "B" right? sweet little place that no one hardly casts into if its what I think it is. Yep thats the one. Pond is flooded big time, probably 4-5' over normal. As I was fighting it, I was dreaming of it being a steelhead trapped in the pond after the flood.

I'm guilty of skipping it as well. Sorta tunnel vision on the other parts I guess.
