A few weeks before I caught my first steelhead off the bank. I had no idea how to fish for steelhead or salmon. So a buddy and I went out, he said " you use these spin things" -spin glos- I say " how far do you cast" oh not that far he tells me. So I flip it out and 20 mins. Later first steelie ever 12# clipped! Now on to my salmon-s!
So now I'm Hooked on this fishery after spending many years sturgeon and bass fishing ish fishing was thrown in there as well. So I decide to go all out of what I have learned. Everyday I am at the beach...granted tide being on target. I fish for a few days by myself and notta! See a few caught but not a dang for me. Then one day I head down to where I have been going for the past couple weeks and low and behold it's packed! I'm getting ready to jaunt on out of there and this guy starts yelling hey "you can fish with me" well I didn't recognize his truck but I ended up working with his wife, so I knew him. I was pulling my set up out and ready to cast it out and he stopped me. He told me it was close but he would help me dial in the rest of the way. He re-tied my gear and measured it out. " I wish I remembered those measurements that was my BEST salmon year to date!" I casted out a couple hours went by and mid sammich pole banging ring-a-lignin! Run down set on it and land a 20# springer! I'm like "Hell yeah this is awesome!" They say tag it and cast back out you can get two. So a quick tag and location with nervous fingers. I cast back out. Around 20-30. Min. Later another bell ringin pole burried take down. I land my second of the day 25# springer! Im am all jacked up and still have time to spare before I have to get to work. So I cut the throat on them and pop the gills. Mean while some guy is takin pictures of me and my plate number..... I get to work and see a sheriff slow troll by my truck a little while after I got there scopin it out. I'm thinking *** did I do wrong?!?! Pretty soon 2 game wardens come and ask me my name. I politely oblige, and they ask me " did you catch a couple fish today " I say yeah and they ask if they can look at the carcasses? Because somebody saw me catch them and said I was cutting the adipose fins off them! I told them " Oh I threw those away" thinking they meant gut pile. So I ended up walking them down to my great aunts house to show the first one, then driving while they followed me to my place to show the other. They looked at what they had to see and told me "Sorry for your time, you did a great job and those are some nice looking fish!" This is almost enough to discourage someone. I ended up with 8 that year and one landed for 8 take downs the last day. As I never once sharpened my hooks the whole time. Yeah rookie mistake I learned real fast. So that is my first salmon-s story, thanks for reading:-)
