View Full Version : Before Desk Job Willamette Mornings

Work is now requiring us to start no earlier than 7am, I figured I better go use the Sand Shrimp that are still in the fridge from Sunday's clack visit that didn't even get my line wet. I checked the sunrise time (5:58) last night and set the alarm for 4:40 thinking I'll get at least 1.5 hours of relaxation in this morning before I have to start work and not completely waste the $5 in bait.

The not so pleasant sound of the alarm found me in a groggy state and I choose to hit snooze for the next 30 minutes feeling like it was all rather pointless to try the Swan Island Willamette anyway. I finally roll out of bed and take a shower to wake myself from my stupor, get dressed in my button up shirt and slacks, grab the tackle box and the shrimp...that's an odd smell. :( Yes, all but one of the poor things have died, and I now know I'll be chucking spinners this morning.

I get to my parking lot at work and drive all the way to the back, grab my gear (recently setup for this seasons Coho), and wander down to the bank. It's a typical quite morning on the Willy, peaceful with the occasional noise of a train in the distance, or the shipyard across the river. And as usual, the occasional morning rise or jump from a fish taking something off the surface, all within casting range of the bank. The fact that I just put 20lb CXX on the reel, I decide I need to use some of the larger spinners and put on a rather ugly green and brass rooster tail. 10 casts in, I'm bored with it, and switch to my ugly, beat on, #5 Mepps Trophy Series orange body silver blade....the same one that caught the "trout" from Clackamette park. Four casts in, I still have it in my mind that I'm not going to catch anything and I'm just tossing, day dreaming, and have a nice lazy retrieval, 4ft from shore...bump bump bump....couldn't have been....but I swore I saw a flash and it sure as heck didn't feel like I was bumping bottom..... My heart is thumping and I'm a bit more excited. I toss again and this time 10-15ft from shore...bump bump. Now, I know that's not the bottom. :D I also have a feeling the hook is a bit too large for what is biting at it but, I don't care and keep tossing....reminding myself to slow the retrieval back to lazy and bump bump BAM! HAHAHA!!! Fish ON! A very short fight later. (silly 20lb line) Oh look, it's a little Smallmouth, who had to open his mouth REALLY big to get that hook in it. :D

I get the supid idea to switch to a smaller blue fox (#2 silver blade red body) that can't really pull the line out so then I toss a weight on the front and that seems to be casting even worse, so I switch back to the Mepps but, it's too late and the morning bite (or school) has passed and I have to be at my desk in 15 minutes. I nod good morning to a kayaker as I pickup my tackle box, she says good morning, and I answer with a nice smile:
"Morning, nothing like a little meditation before work."

Okay, so I'm gonna get a little crazy and try a "earplug popper" tomorrow morning with a wolly bugger dropper.

I think it might not have been so good to catch the fish this morning as all I want to do is go back outside. :D

Tomorrow will have pictures.

Those bass on the willamette can be alot of fun, I have had really good luck with the brass & green rooster tail you mentioned in the 1/4 oz. size

:D Thanks Matthew. Today was different, I got to the water at 5:30 and fish were rishing EVERYWHERE. I only brought the fly rod to restrict myself to using it. Needless to say, I'm getting pretty darn good at roll casting within 30 feet. After that point, anymore line just flops at 30ft anyway. I tried traditional casting and I still need more practice judging how much space I actually have behind me. :)

Anyway, it's VERY annoying to watch lots of fish be active around you yet totally ignore you. I knew if I had the other rod this morning I would have at least gotten a bite. I still had a great time. Even had a nice large (up to 20") trout clear the water 40 feet in front of me....I was watching my fly line straight out at about 25 feet and it jumped almost exactly straight off the end of the line.

As for the rooster tail Ryan, I think this one is a bit larger....closer to 3/4 :D I do have a 1/4oz and I am definatly coming back tomorrow with 10lb line on the reel. The fly rod....well, I think I'm going to save that for faster water.

Well, this morning was a skunking as well. A lot less activity on the water because there was a morning breeze. The water was about 2 feet higher than it was Tuesday morning so that limited my mobility. I do need to figure out how to move more often as I didn't cover nearly enough water. Did however witness a large salmoniod jump, only half the body came out of the water and based on what I saw it was at least the length of my arm.

You think those are bass rising?

There may be some bass but I can clearly watch some of these guys fully exit the water and there's nothing that looks as pretty as a bright chrome beast in the morning sunshine.

Speaking of which, I went 3/4 today using a Rapala Original Floater (G in color). First time I've ever caught anything on one and I must say, it's amazing how a fish will attack a lure that's almost half it's body length.

The 2nd fish of the morning made me wish I had my camera.....it beat up the drag (set lighter for the little ones) and was fairly hefty to me once I got it in. Estimating just 2lbs but wasn't expecting that where I'm fishing.

So you think those are carp then? I figured most of them would be bronze colored by now.

Yeah the instinct of those bass are ridiculous, to attack food that's more then half their own size.. ridiculous!

No way is it anything other than Steelhead/Salmon jumping.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow morning now that I've started to learn more and catch more.

Man are you serious!?

I heard about that from some rumors on Ifish... but I thought they were just that, rumors... Theres a place I like to go fish on the west side of the Willamette, but its further down towards the Multnomah channel, right by my house. I've never fished it in the early morning like that but I wonder if I went down there in the morning if i would see them rise like that...

Man I'd like to go down there before dawn and sneak up on 'em with some R&B's :) or maybe a little bobber and black jig, or some eggs :)

I definitely know that quite a few fish go through the Willamette, both steelhead and spring and fall chinook... my fish i caught in 2007 in the willamette is proof of that.

Silly me, I just realized that Smallmouth, carp and older chinook salmon can all be roughly the same color! Kind of cool.....and in roughly the same water, take the lower clackamas river for instance...

Gabe
08-20-2009, 09:55 AM
Yup, I'm serious. Most interesting to me is about 80% of the ones I see jump are all nose up river. This morning I am positive that I saw no Salmonoid jump and only a few Bass splashed the surface, nothing cleared the surface....Correction, only bait cleared the surface. The tide was really high this morning and so my range was limited due to the fact I didn't want to go tramping through the bushes in my work clothes. I still caught two! :) And I got pictures however, I have no way to get them off the camera here at work. A minor oversite I will correct tomorrow.

As for reaching them from the bank, I have no real faith it would happen except by chance (you lucky freak might be able to :P) where I'm fishing at. The closest ones are at the point of impact for a nice hurl on an 8' rod with 8lb line and a #5 Blue Fox.....50' or so if I had to guess. And there's not much current so bobber and jig would be like fishing in a lake.

:D Noted. I will get a picture of where I fish, Tuesday (Mondays I work from home) and make this a proper post. And since I'm going to go screw around at Peter Kerr Park near where the Coho meetup is tonight, I'll post better pictures if anything interesting happens.

I tried a new technique on the same lure this morning. The 12' rod really helps :) So most of these bass have been taking the lure closer to shore, it was a bit windy so it would always blow the lure down river a bit when I cast out. I caught a little guy reeling in kinda slow and smiled, I always have a good day when I catch a fish. Then I got this idea, since the wind is pushing down river and these guys are close to shore, I just decided to start casting downstream about 15-20 feet off shore and reel nice and slow upstream with the rod extended out over the water as much as possible.....SNAG! Holy crap the line went super tight (and I like this lure :( ).....no way was I reeling in that fast to cause the line to....SHAKE SHAKE ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzz. WOOOHOOOO! Holy crap, this is awesome! The fish kept downstream for a while with me working to turn it up only for it to turn right back down and take the line I had just got back. I finally get this guy pointed the right direction again and it decides to head out away ZZZzzzzzzz..ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ :D Yeah baby! So after about 5 minutes of fighting the fish I finally get it into shore, smile, remove the hook, take a HORRIBLE cell phone pic, and send it back on it's way. Too fun.

I went 3/4 this morning, even got one that was hitting the surface to take the lure I cast to it. That's always fun. Great way to start the day.

Okay last post, and I'll let this thread die. :)

I've become picky with what I take pictures of, today I caught 3 bass and didn't take any pictures because I just felt they were "average" :)

I had a good conversation with a kid and his grandfather, it was nice to just be able to talk to someone without them looking at me with that "why are you talking to me" attitude. The only bummer of it was they came down and plopped right in the middle of my "prime zone" while I was exploring a bit upriver. "You threw off my groove" HAHA, no worries I just fished above and below them, and did good enough, the kid was excited when he caught fish and when I caught so it was a great morning.

BTW, the old Rebel Humpback (found out the name of the lure) is still the one I prefer to use in the mornings. It's got enough weight to actually cast, and keeps catching. Now I don't even take the small box with me.

A co-worker of mine brought his boat in today and we're going to go after work, I think we'll be around the St. John's bridge but then, I don't know, its up to him. This morning was just me getting back into the groove, the overcast didn't help and I didn't get a bite but, I really didn't care it was about me getting on the water and healing.

Here's pic from the boat trip, I spent more time catching or trying to catch than taking pictures. At one point it was 3 fish for 3 casts for me and 2 fish for 2 casts for Will. Good times.

This little guy got off about a millisecond after I took the picture. :) I really wish I had gotten him spitting the hook but oh well, this is good enough.

Will just sent me this pic. I was worried about this guy, he ended up getting the second hook wrapped into his gills but Will and I were able to work it out together without any harm :)

Yesterday dad came into town from the coast and I asked him to bring one of the lighter rods so I can have some fun in the morning. I setup a Shimano 2000 and a 7' Daiwa Procaster-S for this morning with 6lb line and have a good feeling about it.

This morning started out great. Usually nothing happen in the first 15 minutes. First cast with the 3" Silver Rapala Original felt a little odd like the line was dragging around the tip or something as I'm reeling in, I hook a fighter! Sweet, gonna be a good day, then it gets off. Drat. I look up at the guides and nothings wrapped so I send the lure back out and still a lot of drag and the reel is kinda sluggish too....odd. I inspect again and see nothing and put it down to the age of the reel and it needing to be serviced. I go and cast downstream and as soon as the lure hits the surface BAM Yeah baby!! The drag is kinda sticking and not being smooth though and as I bring the little fighter in close it jumps and spits the hook right at me. Drat #2. Then I see it, when I put the pole together I wrapped the line around the rod so the drag is from the middle. I fix that and suddenly everything feels just right with the setup. And......and......and......and.....ARGH, nothing for the rest of the morning. I had a feeling the bass had moved up stream but for some oddball reason I didn't move. *shrug*

Nope, that's Wills. But it's a Bass boat for sure. 1970 era he picked up for $2,500 and made a few mods here and there. Gets the job done if you ask me. Me, life is in the way, and a boat is on the LONG term goal.

Hrm, the sunrise is getting later and later. Fishing time for me is from 6am-6:50am...sunrise is 6:42 tomorrow and it's a minute or two later each day for the rest of the month.....I will see how tomorrow goes on spinnners and cranks and if nothing produces, I may have to switch to.....dare I say....bait.

If so, I'll be running 3 hooks 18" apart each.

You could get by with just a small boat for that type of fishing for sure, I could own the willamette with a 16 foot aluminum anything...

The first "boat" we get will be a kayak

I'm thinking a 13' Prowler or something of the like. :D

EDIT: after reading reviews....Liquid Logics 12' Manta Ray sounds ideal.

This morning was perfect for flies, super low tide, no wind at all, and constant surface brushing from top water feeders. Of course I took the fly rod out of the car for the weekend. :( So, I worked with Rapala's, ThinFins, and Spinners. Side snagged a small bass while twitching in a Rapala but other than that nothing. The interesting thing is as I was walking back to the ramp and out of the corner of my eye I see some High-Vis yellow.....in a spool.....on a very large reel....Sweet! Okay so the reel is a bit beat up and it's FRICKEN HUGE, and weights about 2lbs, but I'll find some use for it some day. It is a Daiwa Jupiter-S Spinning.

Can you link me up to those reviews, or to the boats directly?

I caught an old sturgeon setup by the tip guide one time in the Willamette..it has been over 10 years ago now but I still use the reel. It had to be rebuilt but functions good now. Odd that I could hoop a tip guide while plunking a gator bait at 80 feet water, with no measurable current lol..

Today was a good day! I decided to change up to the light weight 3" silver Rapala to imitate all the shad in the river....and when I say all the Shad, I mean there must be BILLIONS of those things. First cast in and I hook up with a decent one but it gets off after a couple of good shakes. Okay fine, let's cast over there again. HEHEHE Fish on! I made sure to set the hook a couple of times. This one taught me two things. First, this Daiwa Procaster-S is way too strong of a rod for anything under 3lbs. Second, when you're fishing with smaller gear, you want to make sure you have pliers. The bass had the front hook near the middle of his tongue and when I looked in my bag....clippers, knife, flashlight, pen, muclin, another knife....DAMN. So, I took the clippers and used the point of the file, hooked it through the eye of the hook and worked the hook out that way. Needless to say I didn't like how long it took (maybe 2 minutes) and I definitely will be putting the pliers back into the bag as soon as I get home.

So another two average sized fish later and I'm happy, the last one I caught this morning was about 12" like the first one. It shook roughly while I was trying to work the lure loose and I dropped it to avoid getting hooked, right onto the rocks. :( Needless to say it was a bit more cooperative after that, or just stunned. I didn't get any pictures this morning because the past few days have sucked, I didn't expect to catch anything, and I've been asked to leave it at home from time to time :D Besides I get it all day tomorrow.

Oh yeah I forgot to add, I used Anise Gel along to the top of the lure and added a mix of long and short twitches into the retrieve at random intervals.

Gabe
09-16-2009, 01:53 PM
Alex has been kind enough to remind me I need to keep updating this even if it sucked. :) Maybe it should be retitled to Gabe's Willy Blog. HEHE.

Yesterday my head was somewhere else and I just couldn't get into any confidence. I kept switching between cranks and spinners and was totally distracted. But the water was calm and gorgeous so last night I put only the fly rod into the car......here's the problem. I keep forgetting that I can't really cast more than 20 feet. :D So, after 20 minutes of screwing around in the dark, I waved my flag and went crying up to my desk :) Funnest thing was my friend called me about 10 minutes later and asked where I was, cause of all the days, someone finally showed up to join me. HAHAHA.

So, I'm going to take a fly fishing class, until then, I'm sticking to the spinning rod. Tomorrow is a no go for the pre-work because I'm taking the wife and kid to the airport but, I'll be goofing off all afternoon at Commonwelth Lake with small bobber and worms, it's way too weeded up for spinners.

Yeah all the baby shad.....they're the perfect bait fish size of 2-2.5 inches of shiny length, and always "rolling" hahah if you can call it that, as the sun comes up. I'm sure there's other fish in there too, the next bass of decent size I catch, I'll check it's stomach (gently) and take some pictures of what they're eating.

As for the suck part, I meant if the fishing sucked. :)

Yup, we see people do it from the windows of work all the time. Mostly boats do the catching but the guys on shore that hurl 8oz weights out do it also.

Commonwelth Lake in Beaverton is no good. It's weeded up too much and the pressure, even though it hasn't been stocked in 5 months, is still high enough to weed out any fish you cannot trick. I spent 4 hours there yesterday afternoon/evening hanging out with the dog. Not even a bite and only little tiny guys occasionaly spashing the surface.

This morning, I brought yesterdays worms and fished them off the bobber on the slow willy current and had one spot where I kept getting a bite and the bobber would go under but I couldn't get a hookset. So, after way too long working that spot with the same technique, I thought about Teddys senko worm post......why not do that with live worms? THANKS TEDDY! :D First cast out and I also remembered they bite lightly.....holy cow is that a light bite! I barely saw the 6lb line move with drooping slack in it! So I wrapped it around my index finger and sure enough it was a bite, *set* YAY! Perfect top lip hookup! The only bummer is I didn't have enough time to keep playing with this technique. Any other day, I would have just stayed and started work a little later but I want to get to the Clack tonight after work so no staying late.

PS: I love removing single hooks vs trebles :)

Are there any other fishes out there besides the usual bass, shad, etc? Are there any Walleyes on the willy?

Many moons ago, I was fishing at my sister-in-law's house boat on the Columbia and caught a walleye. I didn't know what it was back then and thought I caught some wierd monster. Very superstitious and thought it would bring me bad luck so I tossed it back. Not until a few years later I realized what I'd caught. Is Walleye fishing still big in Oregon?

Crappie, Perch, Shad, Bass, Sturgeon, Walleyes, Carp....there's a few other options. The bass are the most fun so I continue to target them.

Yes, Walleye fishing here is big, and it's getting bigger as more people become aware of the fact that they're here.

Yea I remember it was pretty big but I haven't heard anything about it recently. How do you catch them? I remembered something about trolling nightcrawlers on a wedding ring...

That's one of the more common methods, and about the only way I'd bother fishing for them, but I've only fished for Wallies once and just ended up catching trout. HAHA

So, I decided to screw around with a buzz-bait this morning. Wow, those things have to be hit just out of sheer annoyance. Weirdest part for me was hearing the buzzer spin up while I was casting. Anyway, I got a hit on that thing......6 inches from shore, startled the hell out of me! :) I didn't get it but it sure as heck woke me up.

Thanks! I was wondering when I saw the buzz baits first, they were HUGE. I ended up getting a small "pond" buzz bait because I knew there was no way one of the locals would bite a standard sized buzz. :)

Yeah I've been bust for the last week. They're still active, but it's right at the end of my fishing time because the sunrise is so late now.

I did, and you're welcome. I'm looking forward to the spring bite that's for sure.
