Clackamas River Fishing: Born high in the Cascade mountain range in northern Oregon the Clackamas river is known for great fishing for chinook, coho, and steelhead almost year around. The river has a national fish hatchery located on Eagle creek and a state fish hatchery on the main river inside Milo McIver state park near the town of Estacada. Several parks such as Milo McIver, Barton, Carver, Riverside, Bonnie Lure, and High Rocks create just a few of the many bank fishing opportunities this large river has to offer. Fishing for salmon & steelhead is allowed year round in the lower river below North Fork dam. Catch & release only fishing is allowed in the upper river above North Fork Reservoir. Fishing the Clackamas river is like any other typical salmon & steelhead river with most common methods being productive. Back bouncing and pulling assorted diver and bait combos account for most boat caught salmon. Bobber fishing with salmon roe and sand shrimp also accounts for a large number fish each year from boats and by bank anglers. Popular methods for catching summer and winter steelhead on the large Clackamas river include spinners, drift fishing, jig fishing with a float, backtrolling divers with bait, back trolling sardine wrapped Qwickfish, and fly fishing steelhead patterns. Booking a trip with a local fishing guide can always give you an advantage if your new to fishing the river.
