The 2010 chum salmon run was better than most years in Oregon. I was fortunate to be over in Tillamook on a day when conditions were perfect and schools salmon could be seen passing through on the incoming tide. My partner for the day Ed Fast was also excited to see new water with a great chance of many fly rod hookups. Although switching up seemed to be key throughout the day, at some point these fish would bite

Here are a dozen photos that might inspire one to take up plunking along the banks of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers this season. By season I am talking about chinook and steelhead that can be caught by bank anglers from now through fall as 3 runs of salmon and steelhead make their way East. The 2010 spring chinook season gives you an added chance at these fish because there will be little to no boat traffic due to regulations imposed on anglers for

Gear wise, you need a rod that has a reasonably soft tip section - but has the bottom 75% of a 2x4! It needs to be capable of comfortably bouncing lead from an oz or less all the way up to 10-12 sometimes more.

In response to Matt's call out for tutorials I thought i would share the basics of my favorite fishery. Trolling for Spring Chinook is probably my strongest season however I admit I am by no means an expert, so I thought I would put together the gear, bait, and tactics necessary to get any rookie started. This year saw dry conditions well into late October and when the rain came, so did the fish! On the coast they keep coming through December with each rain or flood event. Mike has shown me around the Trask River for about

Sometimes in fishing for salmon and steelhead it helps to have someone show you the ropes around town. Max was no stranger to fishing and that was obvious from the first time I met him. He has running bass and trout competitions going with the neighbor man, yes a man. Max gets around

For me the term small stream salmon fishing has always coaxed visions and dreams of salmon filled drifts in small rivers and little streams that you can really sink your teeth into. Most of us who fish the Northwest have a variety of places we visit each season and a good majority of them are larger river or open water fisheries. I think for some of us

For the last 20 years I have spent in Oregon I have fished with many many great anglers and a ton of up and comers. When I look back at all the places I fished with all these people I see that fishing friends tend to re-connect around that "certain" time of year when something you have in common begins to occur all over again. I have a pretty rich history fishing
