    Default better late than never

crabbed out of newport a couple weeks ago and there was plenty to go around. We tossed back tons of soft crab and left with 26 dungeness some of them an inch wider than the entire crab guage.
There were tons of undersize too, some so close they are probably keepers by now.

we talked to several boats at the dock with little to no crab, and the only thing we did differently was our bait. As well as having zincs on the pots (Sacrificial Anodes).

bait wise we use rockfish and salmon carcasses, shad herring and squid. stick a black rockfish carc or a section of a salmon carc per pot, and then FILL your bait boxes with shad squid and herring. Don't skimp on bait!

our best keeper ratio in the pots was at BARELY over 5 fathom, so don't be afraid to look shallow.

Yummy, I need to make a trip out there again.

Where do you get your zincs?
Float from the bank and drift from the boat.

Definitely nice haul Alan, I usually just go to this one place out of Garibaldi and buy a couple.

Zinc is a metal that you attach to your pots to absorb/discharge the electrical charge caused by electrolysis. They are put on boat motors also to prevent electrical corrosion/deterioration. Or something like that.

Thanks guys. Crabbin is a nice change of pace, and dang they're good.

Gabe you can get zinc all over the place. then just use wire or whatever you want to attach them.

Ryan, some pots run "hot" and actually shock the crab when they touch them. That's why some pots just dont fish well. All pots can use the zincs, some are just hotter than others and really need 'em. The zincs also give your pot a longer life span since the zinc gets sacrificed instead of the pot itself corroding.
Some guys use aluminum anodes, some use magnesium anodes, and some use zinc. Zinc is best for salt or brackish water.

If you're interested research "galvanic corrosion" "galvanic scale" and "electrolysis".

Didn't quite get which bay you were crabbing but I visit Tillamook every year with a bunch of friends. We shuttle our gear over to the spit just around the corner from crab harbor and fish up until high tide. Bait includes salmon carcasses and shad but one of us raises cattle and he'll slay them with beef hearts. Go figure. In my opinion, stinky shad works best and the smellier the better. We joke about how we think the crabs will swim down from Astoria to get our shad.
