Steelhead Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss

A.k.A. Names: Steelhead, sea trout
Family: Salmonidae
Range: Most rivers from Monterey California, North to Bristal Bay Alaska, Great Lakes Region, Bering Sea Regions
I.D. Tips: Red stripe follows lateral line
Run Timing: Runs in Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, runs of steelhead are present every month of the year in some locations such as Umpqua, Rouge and Columbia
Travel: Travels in small groups, moves with haste through center of stream, moves along banks in high water
Holding: Drifts, riffs, pools, runs, and tailouts
Spawning Preference: Gravel side channels and shallow riffs, tailouts, spawns October through December and December through May
Spawning Color: Silver with white or greenish with one or two scarlet red stripes
Average Adult Size: 6 to 14 Lbs - Larger to over 20 lbs in Alaska and Canada
