Default Heading to Wickiup this weekend

Headin over the hill early Fri morn with fishin buddy whose father has a house in LaPine Gonna hit Wickiup all day on Sat for sure and possibly Fri eve. Gonna try some fly fishing on the Fall River as well. Hoping the wind stays down. Gonna be cold, but it looks like the sun should be out.

BTW, any suggestions on where you like to fish Wickiup? We are going to be targeting big browns and then probably try for some kokes.

    Thanks!

Never been but I do know to bring along Rapala's from the bass gear if hunting Browns.
Float from the bank and drift from the boat.

I fished The Deschuttes arm on Tues and saw a couple caught on spinners. One deep in the channel the other up near the cutoff line in the river itself. Both about three pounds. There were a lot of midges on the surface but very little eager fish going after them. So I would say work over a lot of water casting spinners witha slow retrieve in the deschuttes arm. You can launch out of Sheep's Bridge. The fall has been hit and miss one day lots of fish and no takers the next day same number of fish and all of them want to eat go figure. There are some big holdovers hiding in amaongst downed trees so work as close to the structure as you can and they might just come out and play with you until they wrap you around a branch and say good bye. I have pulled a nice 18 "er out near the hatchery a few weeks ago.

The Davis arm produces well this time of year for browns. Troll big Rapalas black and gold is a good color, also troll a stick bait of some kind that looks like a Kokanee.

    Default here's the report

First, thanks for the info guys.

Now, when we get to LaPine on Fri morning, we arrive to 3 inches of snow on the ground. After a couple of hours though, sun comes out and snow is gone. With the wind kickin up, we decide to hit the Fall River for some fly action. Parked upriver from the hatchhery, and spot a few fish. Start casting and fishing buddy hooks up. Wiithin 2 seconds fish is gone. He lets me hit the hole, and being almost brand new to this style of fishing, it wasn't easy. I swing the nymph in front of the fish, and I see one of them move in that direction..set the hook...fish on! And right back off

It was crazy that I couldn't feel the hit. Had to watch the fishes mouth and movement. Still though, first official hook up on a fly! Buddy hooks up again moments later, but again came unbuttoned.

Get up early Sat to 22 and sunny. Put the boat in and zip over to the Davis Arm. Trolled Rapala's for a couple hours with no luck, but then found a little spot that was holding Kokanee. We set up some jiggin rods, (again, first time using this method) and tip the lures with some yellow fire corn. Within minutes...BAM fish on...Biggest koke I have ever caught..went about 16-17 inches. Lots of action for a couple of hours. We put 8 in the boat, with my buddy catching another big one with the others being in the 10-12 inch range, and lost that many more. Lots of aerial action with spit hooks.

Decide to troll once more with some smaller gear. Fishin buddy hooks up with 2 more on a trolled rooster tail. Move over to the Deschutes arm, wind picks up, and we decide to call it a day.

Still, had some serious fun and some great weather.
