Steelhead Flies

[Arctic]

The ever versatile, ever evolving...Steelhead Nymph...

Here's one of my newest incarnations...Maybe we call her...Bubble Gum Betty.


Here we go.
Use whatever thread, and hook you like, This one happens to be a #1 Owner Mosquito, with a 3/16" black bead head. I use Danville thread, 210 Denier. Purrty heavy.


Tie in a Mylar tinsel tag, then secure it.


Tie in a few pieces of Krystal Flash for a sweet tail, then pull the foward facing strands back, and secure.



Go to the nearest Temple... Find the Pink Dog, and ask for his hairs...


Use the Temple Dog hairs in a "dubbing loop" or create one in your thread if you use a rotary vise. Like I did here.


Spin the Temple Dog.


Tie it in with medium pressure.


Spin it on to the hook shank with heavy pressure.


Find the crappiest lookin Schlappen feather you have.


Tie in the tips.


Wrap foward.


Pack and wrap, to form a mildly tapered head, behind the bead.


Whew! We're done...

Niice fly! Actually, not to throw off the epicness going on here with this fly but have you ever considerd using this same design and flow with colors for a jig? I could definitely see it being on a 1/16th jig with those feathers, maybe a lil yarn as well and it would just be a slaughter house! Just a thought Great fly Ian!

Aw dang! You are on the right track buddy!

I have the Temple Dog in lots of colors, same with the Schlappen... A little Steelhead Stalkers UV Yarn for a sweet tail, and some of their UV Flash Dub to make a wicked collar. A black red, and white would be an EPIC "Nightmare" variation... tied on a 1/16, or 1/32 head!.. Oooh... You got the distillery fermenting in the brain! Its just a matter of time before I crank one out! You just wait! Hahahahaha!

hahaha Glad were on the same page! Sounds like a raging jig on roids none the less! Hey hey! If you do crank one out dont forget to take the pic! I might end up asking for one..or two from you I actually have a few Ideas in my head already from looking at those flies that I could use for a jig if I knew how to make jigs, or even had the tools for them. I might end up detailing them to you to see what you can crank out with yours! Keep the lines tight!

Anytime Charlie! I will have a few tubes for you here soon. I just need to get the second vise station all set up and start twisting fibers!

Thanks Dillon! I spin all sorts of crap in the thread, or in a dubbing loop! I tie a bare bones intruder where basically everything is spun onto the tube, or into a loop!
