    Default Thinking about moving up...

    To Alaska after I graduate....
Any recommendations on where to go and find a job... I was talking to someone who is going to talk to the guy he works for up in Sitka and see if there is anything up there for me....

I really want to salmon and steelhead fish up there... Does the kenai area rivers have Steelies?

  2. Default Alaska is a BIG place

Alaska is HUGE! If you were to put alaska over a map of the US it would go coast to coast, top to bottom!

What kind of work are you looking for?

The Kenai river is not particularly known for steelhead, however one is occasionally caught. The rainbows, however can reach 34++"!!! and have the girth of a salmon...

The Kasilof river and the other rivers on the lower part of the Kenai peninsula have decent steelhead runs. I believe that the Ninilchik river is the furthest north native steelhead run in North America.

If it is salmon that you seek, well, the Kenai is probably the most famous/popular river for producing sockeye, coho, pink and king salmon.

    Good luck

A talk to a guide and he said he was going to talk to the person he guides for up in Sitka to see if there is any jobs..

I want to find a job that involves fishing.
Whether it involves working for a guide like the one in your sig or working for a ocean charter.

Forgot to add that I would if I do work for a guide/charter I would much rather it be a river guide... Since I have more interest in river fishing and want to be a river guide in Oregon and Alaska.

    Thanks

  5. Default guiding in Alaska

Work as a deck hand on a charter boat is fairly easy to come by. Just gotta get the word out. Now is a great time to start looking. I know several boats that are frequently looking for help in Homer and Seward. I am sure in Southeast (Sitka area) there are plenty more.

To be a river guide is another animal all together. To run a power boat, you will need a USCG OUPV Merchant Marine license. You will need to document a certain amount of days operating power boats (by the way, some drift boat and raft time will count).

To guide out of a non-powered boat is much easier. You will just need a guide license (available through the State of Alaska Deptartment of Fish and Game), first aid certification, drug testing program and insurance (and a boat of course).

You could also do shore based fishing or fish with a lodge for fly-outs.

There certainly is opportunity available. Do your homework and have something lined up before you come up (at least be willing to pump gas, bag groceries, work at a cannery or whatever until your guiding opportunity opens up).

You will also want to line up an off season job, because guide pay just doesn't cut it. You may be able to pay for a portion of your college tuition however. That is a good combination.

    Good luck

Yea... I talked to Justin at Frontier Charters in Sitka and he said he would contact me when they get their crews together for next summer.

Hows the pay for a deckhand? Is it worthy enough to live off of?

Depends on your quality of living. If cardboard box is sufficient... then probably yes.

I recommend that you seek other work during the off season.

Check Ninilchik Charters, The Seward Fish House, or simply do a google search for charters and send out your resume/application.

    Good luck
