What Halibuthitman said seems to be what everyone is saying. So it looks like you get a reel 2 sizes larger for your spey setup if I am not mistaken but what about the swith rod? can you used a matched reel or do you go 2 sizes higher on that as well, I am hoping not because I do not want the extra weight unless I am planning to use a full length rod.

So far I am leaning to the switch rod first, yes I bead but not all that often in Oregon. I want it more for the mid sized streams I am used to fishing but over all I will end up with both soon enough, half my one handers are for sale lmao..

A switch rod, loaded with like... A Skagit Short, or similar line, will jack your gear out far enough to fish most places you enjoy. And landing fish solo, with a 13' stick, can get interesting!

I have an 8/9 wt. sized reel on my 7 wt switch rod. Seems to balance well. But the size doesn't seem to matter as much as it does on a full spey. My only issue, is fighting the tip. So I go pretty heavy on the back end.

I like you take on landing fish solo with a 13' rod Ian! Interesting is the mild word if the fish is hot!!!

I lose the vast majority of my swung fish, trying to just get a grip on the tail wrist!

I have used Echo 4wt and 6 wt switch rods to great effectiveness in central Oregon (wickiup, davis, crane, the D).I have loaded them with Ambush TT, Airflo Switch line or just 8wt WFF on the 6 wt. I have caught SRC,Steelhead,Chums and pinks on the 6wt. Lost the 4wt in paulina to the DEEP. I so miss it. I am looking towards a 3wt two hand for swinging on the Yak next year.

a 2 handed 3 weight would be incredible!
the lightest 2 hander I have is a 6wt and I would love to see what a nice oregon trout feels like on a 3!

At this point I think I would go for a firm switch rod with a skagit commando system.. looks pretty legit! maybe this coming yea I can afford it finally.....

That's what I'm running for lines, bunch of skagit heads and lazar line for my running line. It shoots well but is kinda weird to get used to manipulating.
