Why Bluegill are the Best Catfish Bait in Summer
What is the best catfish bait? Well, one of the best catfish baits to use in the summer is bluegill. For many anglers, bluegill is the ultimate summertime catfish bait. Also called bream, this family of sunfish encompass many species of small fish that inhabit much of the warm water freshwater in the United States. Bluegill is an excellent catfish bait.
Choosing a perfect catfish bait is not easy, or easy to come by. Catching shad requires that a a fisherman be able to throw a cast net. Throwing a cast net is a skill set all its own, and it can be daunting to develop the finesse it tales to throw a cast net consistently, so many fishermen choose to buy live bait, or use what I call “grocery store baits” like chicken. Since bluegill and other sunfish are relatively easy to catch, especially in the summer, they have become on of my favorite catfish baits.
Bluegill can be used live or as cut bait for catfish. Many people think bluegill are the best flathead bait available. I have caught many trophy flathead catfish using bream for flathead bait. Personally, I prefer using bluegill as cut bait for flatheads, but I have caught many flatheads on live bluegill also. Usually I will start out using live bait, and as the bluegill die on the hook from being hit I turn them into cut bait. How you fish them is up to you, but either method will catch catfish.
