Man,in west TN that black and blue is KILLER! I fish curly tail and ribbon tail worms weightless on the reg. I fish a LOT of Lilly pads and grass. Got some frogs and mice that will SLAY them in the vegetation.

Try a small split shot sometime like 18 in above your bait gets it down faster and the bait still fall slow behind it and it still works just fine and heavy weeds that's what I've been doing I fish stick baits almost religiously but I don't have the patience for them to think on their own in more than a foot of water LOL I found that it seems to work just as good as completely weightless you can fish a little deeper and don't have to be quite as patient

The reason your Shimano curado is making That noise is that the pinion gear is grinded out. I had that problem once and it is replacible.
I love YUM baits. I caught my personal best, a 9 pound 3 ounce largemouth bass, on one of their green pumpkin lizards. They are cheap but a really good value for the price.
