Roadside Creek Fishing – Freshwater fishing Houston Texas
I was in the area for work and I did a little research on google maps and found a creek nearby that I thought would produce. Armed with my travel road a few worms I found some great fish!

Is there no crocs going about
I live in Houston..You told me earlier today you fished our creeks…Longnose, Spotted, Short nose , and Aligator…are the species here.
I believe that is a Long Nose..Aligator Gar has 2 rows of teeth in the top of their mouth..
Short Nose , have a short snout.
Spotted , well….they're spotted…
Our humidity is wicked !
Like a sauna in summer..
And yes, thats a Drum..
The four major gar species in Texas are the alligator gar (up to 8 ft long and heavier build than other gars, with a broad head evocative of its namesake), longnose gar (characterized by a comically long and slender snout), shortnose gar (the most generic one), and spotted gar (striking pattern, popular for aquariums). Your catch at 4:45 is a picture-perfect shortnose gar, and about average size for the species.
I live in houston and I never knew there were fish in those bayous
If you come to the U.S. again I recommend you fishing in the Great Lakes. The quality and quantity is next to none. I recommend Ohio, or Michigan. The walleye and yellow perch fishing is awesome, believe me you will not be disappointed John!
You need to come to Canada and fish for muskie!!! Of course we have some lovely pickerel aka walleye.
John, he looks like an Aligator hence the name, not a crocodile.
Love creek fishing vids. Crazy how they survive in such shallow water. Sick vid!
That drum fish was a beautiful looking fish can’t believe what came out of that muddy creek 👍
That drum Fish was a cracker of a fish, Beautiful Fish, You looked like you had been fishing in monsoon you were absolutely wet through with Sweet, But No Sorry you wouldn't get me fishing in the dark around where there's likely to be Crocs lol good vid though nice Change. cheers
It was neat to watch one of your videos where I knew what kind of fish you were catching.
Today a pocket, tomorrow a submarine hatch
I've managed to hook a couple gar. Fun to catch and delicious when baked…when you manage to finally get them clean, that is. Their scales really are like armor plating. Word from the wise, keep a steel or whet stone handy when cleaning them.
Can't believe you've done Texas! I fished Belton lake a few years back and had to get my bait out of the way of a four foot long Gar. I only had a small line and he would've shredded it. Scared the bejeezus out of a Somerset boy like me!! We don't get fish like that where I'm from naarp…
Absolutely love this, as I do all the videos of yours that I've seen, but it's special because you were in my state. If you're ever around San Antonio, may I suggest Calaveras Lake and/or Canyon Lake? Both are manmade lakes, but they have amazing fish. Calaveras Lake has some huge freshwater red drums and giant catfish. Canyon Lake has some amazing tasting white and striped bass. Both are incredibly fun to fish at.
Nice video. I got a similar channel by the way. Would appreciate a view.
The skeeters (mosquitoes) here in Florids are just as horrible. Nice catches!! My Dad loved to fish. He would fill the freezer then invite everyone from Church over for a fish fry. He passed when he was 50 years young. I miss him horribly.
Yes that was a Freshwater Drum (Aplodinotus grunniens).
Are you sure that that's an Alligator Gar? There are four species of Gar in Texas and, as far as I can see, yours lacks the double row of teeth on the upper jaw. I might be wrong and it's difficult to tell from video footage but I thought it looked more like a Shortnose Gar…. a common smaller species in Texas.
That Gar is a baby.
That FW Drum was beautiful!! I live in the South and I've never seen one before.
You hooked that gar perfectly!!
You ever come to the states and visit louisiana look me up and I’ll take you fishing. To catch those species and more. Even bigger.
This is unexpected and great. I watch you to see how people fish in jolly old, and then I switch you on to find you doing the most basic and some of the most fun kind of fishing in the States! Loved it.
Didn’t know you crossed the pond. Haven’t keyed out fish in 35 years, but I think it was a short -nosed gar. You are in the area for alligator gar though. In Arkansas we have 4 varieties, the alligator, short-nosed, long -nosed and spotted. Hope you enjoyed your holiday when here. Again enjoyed the video.❤️👍
I've recently run across these older videos of yours from Texas! That's where I live at. I was wondering if the mosquitos were gonna eat you up ! Then, at the end I saw that they love you too! 💙 Good show
Really interesting. Thanks John. One of the aspects of the novels of James Lee Burke that has I suppose me coming back every time, was the fishing that is often integral to the story. Fishing Louisianna, Montana and Texan waters. To UK anglers most of the species are different, even their Bass. Plus, I imagine that most of the fish have never seen a baited hook, a bit like sea fishing
Locked in and watching loads of fishing videos.
those fish aren't edible tho correct? i mean that water is probably teeming with toxins
I read somewhere these fish can survive out of water for a couple of hours, can breath atmospheric air I think?
You were in my neck of the woods.
I was cast netting for some smaller species and accidentally caught my first gar in Addicks today! Check it out if you get a free sec, keep up the good work dude 👍🏽
oh damn.. look at that mud hole! screams gar, bowfin and catfish!!!
Hello from South Carolina, US. I cut my teeth as a young fisherman in small creeks like this. We country folk call them worms, too.
Come to southern Indiana and I'll show you some great creek fishing for smallmouth bass, sunfish, and rock bass… Great vids – cheers!
Yes sir, I see you definitely have gotten Houstons kiss of humidity by the looks of your damp shirt. And them mosquitoes are notorious around Houston as well. You know them alligator gar can get huge and YET are harmless to man. They don't attack you, but sure are intimidating by the size of their teeth. Good video buddy!!!
I’m from Texas pretty close to Houston, if you ever come back I’d love to take you red fishing in the gulf, love your vids as well tight lines bro!
Great job! That was a lot of fun to watch
My daughter lives in Florida, similar creek fishing, mate never landed a Gar. Sweet job. Right on his nose! Also, little US style change with Realtree Como trousers instead of the Multi-cam John?
