My Dad and I hit the Umpqua River for some late afternoon shad fishing. It was my Dad’s first shad fishing adventure, so I go over my method in detail as I help my Dad hook his first shad.
GEAR LIST:
ROD: G.Loomis GL2 TJR782 6’6″ Trout spinning rod, 4-8 line, I have 2, one is about 20 years old, the other is a current GL2.
REEL: Shimano Saros 1000 / Sedona 1000
LINE: P-Line CX 6 LB
SINKER: Eagle Claw 1/8 OZ. Egg Sinker, 3mm Bead to protect the knot to the swivel
SWIVEL: #10 Eagle Claw Barrel Swivel
HOOKS: 1/32 OZ. Leadhead Jig
BAIT: 1″ Curly Tails / Light Pink with silver flake

Been a strange year for shad. Not sure about the Umpqua, but the Willamette should be every cast this time of year, and it’s been spotty at best. Always fun to get a handful though.
Loved how you told dad where to stand, where to cast, and boom, fish on. Do you sometimes keep shad to use as bait for future trips?

Just carious, can you DipNet at the Umqua? I am at Las Vegas now but I used to live at the Alaska and locals can DipNet for Sockeye Salmon during the season.
