Panguitch Lake, Utah
Fly fishing new water can be a great experience. The sense of anticipation, challenge of learning new water, and satisfaction that comes with gaining knowledge. I’d never fished Panguitch Lake. I’ve had a lot of experience lake fishing with a fly and this one was pretty simple. Fishing my Douglas Sky G 9′ 5 wt and 3x tippet because I had my sights on 30″ Tiger Trout, I threw small mayfly nymphs, damsel nymphs, and after a fish came up and slammed my white indicator within a rod’s length of my pontoon boat I threw on a hopper. First cast a guy watching from the bank said, “That didn’t take long!” Nice cutthroat! I caught my first Tiger Trout, also. I know it wasn’t the preferred method to fish the more open water, but it was so dang much fun catching fish almost on every cast. The bigger fish came fishing tight to the grasses and reeds coming out of the water. So I spent time doing both. Fishing in the pockets of grass on the surface with a slow retrieve. Retrieving slowly helped with not getting snagged on the grass and trigger a feeding response! Fish like a little movement with the fly here. One fish slammed my hopper while I was stripping in for a new cast. Don’t see many grasshoppers skating across the water’s surface! I can’t wait to go back, spend more time fishing in thicker grass pockets and closer to shore. The tanks hang in the shallows.
